How much weight can the boom arm safely hold?
It depends on the model. The TM16-1126FA, 1226FS, 1336FS, and 2002AB are rated for 5 kg (11 lbs) on the boom. The TM16-1446FS steps up to a solid 30 kg (66.3 lbs). For the straight stand TM16-2003, the 15 kg rating applies to the top spigot.
Can I remove the boom arm and use the stand as a regular light stand?
Absolutely. Every boom-equipped TM16 model allows you to detach the boom arm and use the stand with a standard 5/8" stud or spigot. This gives you a straight crank-up stand whenever you need it.
Does the crank require maintenance?
The worm-gear mechanism is sealed and lubricated for life under normal studio use. We recommend keeping the riser tubes clean and occasionally wiping them down with a dry cloth. Do not oil the tubes — it can attract dust and compromise the self-locking action.
What's the best way to stabilize the stand when the boom is fully extended?
Always set the largest leg footprint possible and align one leg directly under the boom's load. We strongly recommend using counterweight sandbags on the base leg (a dedicated weight hook is built in on most models). For heavy setups, a shot bag on the opposite end of the boom also helps balance the moment.
